History

In 1906, the new cemetery (including a ceremonial hall) was opened next to the area of the municipal cemetery at Karlstettner Straße. In 1939 National Socialists destroyed parts of the tombstones.

In late 1939, the Ministry for Inner and Cultural Affairs decreed that Jewish cemeteries were not to be changed in any way "in order to secure the property of the Jewish Religious Community".

Wartime events in 1945 destroyed additional tombstones, the cemetery wall was heavily damaged by artillery shells. In 1951, the municipality of St. Pölten had the tombstones set upright again. In the course of the restitution process, the IKG Vienna had to settle the bill for those repairs due to its position as legal successor of the IKG St. Pölten. As almost no Jews lived in St. Pölten after the war, the cemetery became dilapidated.
