Redesign Project

Since 1968 the Old Jewish Cemetery St. Pölten has been just a lawn area including trees, surrounded by a small wall – just a memorial stone refers to the history of this site, where 583 people were buried.

In 2010 the historians Georg Traska and Christoph Lind came up with a project to bring this forgotten place back to the consciousness of the city. The project focuses on the tombstones, their ritual significance and the chequered history of the cemetery. A funerary monument with all the names will bring the decedents back to collective memory and give the descendants space for remembrance.

Due to a GPR from autumn 2011 the exact location of the graves and the structure of the ceremonial hall are known. The area in between the tombs will be redesigned as a public Park to convey the history of this venue. A documentation of the project, the historical research and the artistic implementation will be published.
